1:1-30. 1 Paul and Timothy, slaves of Jesus Christ: to all the saints in Christ Jesus — those existing in Philippi — together with overseers and deacons: 2 gracious unmerited favor and tranquilizing peace to you all from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I am thanking my God on the basis of each remembrance of you all, 4 always making request with joy in my every prayer in behalf of you all 5 with a view towards your unity in accordance with the good news — from day one until the present — 6 having been assured of this very thing: that the One beginning a good work in and among you all will carry it out to completion during the days of Jesus Christ. 7 How proper it is for me to think this about all of you, because I hold you all in my heart. And in my fetters, and in the verbal defense and firm establishment and confirmation of the good news, all of you are being my copartners, jointly partaking of this beneficial opportunity. 8 For God is my witness how earnestly I am loving all of you with the tender affections of Jesus Christ. 9 And I offer this prayer: that your generous love, devotedness and kindly concern may abound yet more and more, equipped with applicable experiential knowledge, and all perspicacious understanding and sensible discernment; 10 for you all to judge, assay, discern and determine — distinguishing those differing things — so that you all may be ingenuous, spotless and without stumbling — un-blamable and clear in any judgment of Christ, 11 having been completely filled with the fruits of righteousification through Jesus Christ for the purpose of revelation and commendation of God.
12 Now I want you all to know, brothers, that these things have come against me, rather, for advancing (the) further progress of the good news, 13 so as to become obvious to the entire praetorian camp, and to all the rest, that my fetters are in Christ; 14 and the greater part of the brothers in our Lord, having believed my fetters, are more likely to assume resolution to fearlessly declare the Word.
15 Some are even preaching Christ with jealousy and a contentious disposition, yet others also with good intention: 16 the first are proclaiming the Christ out of a party-spirited mentality — insincerely — presuming to bring additional pressure to my fetters; 17 but the second out of a devoted love and kindly concern, surely knowing that I am destined for the verbal defense of the good news. 18 What then? Only that by every means, whether for pretense or for love of truth, Christ is being proclaimed; yea, for in this I rejoice, and indeed, I will be full of joy. 19 For I know absolutely that this will result in deliverance for me through your prayers and the aid of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my eager anticipation and confidence that I will be ashamed for not one thing, but in the presence of all, openly as always, even now Christ will be magnified in my body, whether through life or through death. 21 for, for me to live: Christ, and to die: gain. 22 But if I am to live on in humanity, to me this is emolument for work; yet what I shall choose for myself I know not. 23 And I am being hard-pressed by the two, having the earnest desire to depart and to be with Christ as by far (the) more excellent (choice). 24 Nevertheless to remain on in the body is properly necessary for your sakes. 25 And having been convinced of this, I know for sure that I will remain, and continue with all of you for your advancement and joy in the Faith, 26 so that your exultation over me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you all again.
27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner becoming of the good news of Christ so that whether I should come and see you all, or am missing, I may hear about you all, that you are standing firm, constantly persevering in one Spirit — a unified whole making supportive effort in the cause for the Faith of the good news, 28 certainly not being terrified at the sight of no man of those opposing, while it is to them an indication or sign of perdition, yet to you, of salvation — and that too from God. 29 For to you all it has been granted concerning Christ, not only to faithe into him, but also to suffer over him, 30 embracing the same kind of perilous toil you all saw in me, and now you all are hearing (of) by means of me.
3:2-21. 2 You all guard against those dog-like miscreants — religious corrupters — those depraved, evil practitioners — corrupt, afflictive artificers — the mutilation party — concision butchers! 3 Really, we are the (true) circumcision — those serving and worshipping God in spirit, boasting and rejoicing in Jesus Christ, and yet, not having confidence in any fleshly material circumstance, 4 although I am holding at the ready a “confident reliance” or “trust” in fleshly material circumstance. If some other person is ostensibly appearing to have had confident trust in any fleshly material circumstance, I preferably more so: 5 for customary circumcision: on the eighth day; from the nation of Israel; of the tribe of Benjamin; a Hebrew among Hebrews; according to the Law: a Pharisee; 6 conforming to zeal: persecuting the Church; concerning rectitude and godliness with respect to law: being blameless and without defect. 7 But whatsoever were accumulated earnings for me, these I have counted a detriment for the sake of Christ, resulting in present liability. 8 Yet still more, rather, I am even counting all to be a detrimental forfeiture for the sake of the excelling applicable experiential knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for the sake of whom I accepted the relinquishment of all claims, and I am regarding all claims to be scraps, in order that I can be Christ-possessed, 9 and can be found in him, not having my own righteousness — that from law — but that through the faith of Christ — that righteousness from God with a view towards the Faith; 10 to ascertain, know and understand him alone, and the miraculous power of his very resurrection, and the partnership and fellowship of his very afflictions and sufferings, being conformed to his very death, 11 so that, by some way, I might arrive with respect to the resurrection of the dead.
12 Not that I have arrived, or have already been brought to the goal at the end of my course with the present result that I have finished; but I press forward so that I might also seize upon that for which I also have been seized by Christ Jesus. 13 Brothers, I do not deem myself to have attained; but foremost — forgetfully disregarding the things which are behind, and stretching myself forward towards the things ahead, 14 I press forward in the direction of a distant mark with a view towards the prize of the upward invitation of God by means of Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore, let us fully accomplished (believers) develop this mindset; and if you all are set differently upon anything, even this God will reveal to you all; 16 nevertheless, in accordance with what we realized, to likewise agree to observe the very same principle.
17 Brothers, you all jointly assume and imitate my character and appearance, and you all mark or note those so walking, according as you all are regarding our pattern. 18 For many are walking, of whom I spoke often to you all, and even now say weeping — those inimical enemies of the cross of Christ — 19 whose objective: consumption; whose god: appetite; and identification: in their own shame — who set their minds on the terrestrial. 20 For our community and commonwealth is in heaven, from which we are also expecting a Savior — a Lord — Jesus Christ, 21 who will transfigure our body of abject status in order for it to become conformed to the body of his glory according to his ability to effect and to subject all things to himself.
2:1-18. 1 Therefore if any joyous call for cheerful consolation is in Christ, if any gentle encouragement of love, if any spiritual joint-fellowship, if any heart-felt tender affections and mercifully kind compassions, 2 you all fully complete my joy, so that you all can be like-minded, possessing the same generous loving concern — united spirits, thinking all alike — 3 not isolated by a party-spirited, contentious disposition, or a vain-glorious, empty conceit, but for the humble conduct of a modest mind, esteeming one another to be above yourselves in standing, 4 not merely honorably regarding your own individual interests, but also the interests of others. 5 Indeed, let this frame of mind be in you all which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, initially existing in a form of God, did not consider it a wieldable thing to be on an equal footing with God, 7 but humbly divested himself of prerogative, assuming a form of slavery, existing in a similitude of human beings. 8 And being found in appearance as a human, he humbly abased himself, becoming obediently submissive to death — in fact, death by means of a cross. 9 And therefore God supremely exalted him, and granted him that Name above every name, 10 so that at the Name of Jesus every heavenly, earthly and infernal knee will bend, 11 and every tongue can openly profess for itself that Lord, Jesus Christ, in accordance with (the) praise of God (the) Father.
12 Therefore, my beloved, in the manner that you all have at all times submitted, not like as before — for my presence only — but now — to a much greater extent in my absence — you all effectively and productively work out the salvation of yourselves with trembling solicitude and reverential awe; 13 for God is the One working in you all, even to will and to effect for the realization of good intention. 14 Accomplish all without complaints or disputes 15 so that you all may claim for yourselves the character and appearance of faultless and sincere children of God — blameless in the midst of a perverse and wicked generation that has been totally corrupted with distortion and error — before whom you all are yourselves shining as luminaries in a systematically materialistic world order, 16 setting forth a message of life with a view toward my exultation in an evaluation by Christ — that I have not run in futility — not even toiled in vain. 17 Yea, and if I am (yet) being made a grateful libation of dedication upon the sacrifice and ministration of your faith, I rejoice — and rejoice with you all. 18 And likewise, you all also, be joyful; and you all sympathize in joy with me.
4:1-9. 1 So then, my beloved and earnestly desired brothers, my joy and crown, in this way you all stand firm and persevere in the Lord. 2 Beloved, I am imploring Euodia and I am imploring Syntyche to think alike in the case of the Lord. 3 Yes, and I am asking you also, Sudzuge: you yourself help these who vigorously cooperated with me in the good news — even with Clement and the rest of my fellow laborers, whose names constitute a book of life.
4 You all rejoice in the Lord at all times. I shall repeat: you all rejoice! 5 Let your mild reasonableness and gentle probity toward all individuals be ascertained by examination. The Lord is near. 6 Be anxiously solicitous over not one thing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication coupled with gratitude, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God — that surpassing mental conception in all respects — will securely sentinel/garrison about the hearts and souls of you all (that are) arrayed with Christ Jesus.
8 Finally brothers, all who are creditably true, all who are reputably honorable, all who are equitably just, all who are blamelessly pure, all who are acceptably amicable, all who are reputably commendable — if one is morally excellent, and if one is honorably praiseworthy — you all ponder these (persons) with regard.
9 You all habitually practice those things which you all learned, and received, and heard, and saw by means of me also, and the God of peace will be with you all.
2:19-30. 19 Now I trust in the Lord Jesus to soon send Timothy to you all so that I also can be encouraged, knowing about your affairs. 20 For I have no one ready of like mind who will genuinely feel an interest regarding your affairs. 21 For (most) all are pursuing their own matters — not the matters of Christ Jesus. 22 But you all are aware of his tried and proven character, that like as a son for a father he slavishly served with me for the purpose of the good news. 23 Therefore I presently hope to send this one, whenever I can distinctly see about my affairs. 24 Yea, I have confidently trusted in the Lord that I myself also will soon come. 25 Yet I thought it necessary to send to you all Epaphroditus — my brother, and fellow laborer, and fellow soldier — but your agent and minister for relief of my need, 26 inasmuch as he was beside himself with affectionate longing for you all, and worrying, inasmuch as you all heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick with a near approach toward death; but God showed him gracious favor and preserving mercy — and not him only, but me also — lest I should be affected by or subjected to sorrow on top of affliction. 28 Therefore I sent him more urgently, so that, seeing him again, you all can experience joy, and I can be free of sorrow. 29 Therefore, you all receive him in the Lord with all joy, and hold such (a person) dear 30 because, for the sake of the work of Christ, he even came close to the point of death, risking (his) life in order to make good your deficit in ministration toward me.
3:1. 1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! To write the same things to you all is not troublesome nor tedious for me, but means for you all stable immovability, sure firmness and certain security.
4:10-23. 10 Now I greatly received joy in the Lord that at length you started to think of me again, towards whom you all were already taking considerate thought, but you all were lacking an opportune occasion. 11 Not that I speak with reference to want or need, for I have learned in which conditions I am to be content; 12 and I surely know how to be poor; and I surely know how to abound. In each and in all I have been disciplined — presently resulting in an education — both to be gorged and to starve; both to possess full sufficiency and to be lacking for myself. 13 In all respects I have available power and efficient ability through Christ empowering me. 14 Nevertheless, you all did well, sympathetically relieving my pressing affliction.
15 But you all also surely know, Philippians, that in starting the good news, when I departed from Macedonia, not one church contributed to me a reckoning of giving and of receiving except you only; 16 for even in Thessalonica you all repeatedly put forth, once and again, for my necessity. 17 Not that I am seeking the gift, but I am seeking the fruit abounding within your account; 18 and in all respects I have in full, and I abound. I have been filled up with the present result that I am possessed of full sufficiency, having received from Epaphroditus those things from you all — a fragrant aroma and acceptable sacrifice — well pleasing to God. 19 And my God will fill up all of your need according to his wealth in glory possessed by Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father: glorification to the extent of the ages. Amen.
21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me are greeting you all. 22 All the saints are greeting you all, and especially those from the house of Caesar.
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you all. Amen.
