1:1-12. 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will in virtue of a promise of life in Christ Jesus.
2 To Timothy, a beloved Child.
Grace, mercy, peace from Father God and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I am feeling gratitude toward God, whom I am continually serving with a pure conscience originating from the instrumental agency of ancestors, as I hold unceasing remembrance concerning you in my prayers night and day, 4 yearning to see you so that I can be filled with joy, having been mindful of your tears, 5 calling to mind the unfeigned faith within you, which first dwelt within your grandmother Lois, and within your mother Eunice, and I have been confidently persuaded that is within you also. 6 For which cause I am exhorting you to fan into flame the gift of God which is ever within you by means of the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power, and love, and a calm vigor of mind.
8 Therefore, you should not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but be enduringly adherent to the good news according to God’s power, 9 the One having saved and called us with a holy summons, not according to our works, but according to his own predetermination and grace — that having been given to us through Christ Jesus in advance of times eternal, 10 but having now been manifested by means of the appearance of our Savior, Jesus Christ — on the one hand having rendered death null and void, on the other hand having brought to light life and immortality by means of the good news, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher of Gentiles. 12 For which cause I am suffering for these; but I myself am not ashamed; for I know absolutely whom I have believed; and I have been convinced that he is able to keep and preserve my deposit — the thing I committed to his charge — until that day.
4:1-8. 1 Therefore, I myself am making a solemn and earnest charge before God, even the Lord Jesus Christ — the One intending to judge both living and dead in accordance with his appearing and his kingdom — 2 proclaim the Word. Be seasonably and unseasonably earnestly and urgently pressing. Reprove, admonish and exhort with all patience and instruction. 3 For a time will exist when they will not put up with sound doctrinal teaching, but according to their own lusts they will procure for themselves in abundance teachers indulging the itching instrument of hearing, 4 and on the one hand they will turn the ear away from the truth; on the other hand they will be turned aside towards myths. 5 Yet you be ever vigilant over all. Show endurance in trials and afflictions. Do evangelistic work. Fully carry out your ministry.
6 For I am already in the act of being sacrificed, and the time of my departure (in death) has arrived. 7 I myself have fought the good fight. I have completed the course. I have maintained the Faith. 8 From this point on there is laid up for me the laurel wreath of righteousness which the Lord — the righteous Judge — shall render to me on that day — and not to me only, but also to all those having valued and delighted in his appearing.
2:1-13. 1 Therefore you, my child, summon up vigor through the grace within Christ Jesus. 2 And what you heard from me with many witnesses, you yourself commit these to faithful persons who will be competently able to teach others also. 3 Therefore, you show endurance in trials and afflictions as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one performing military duty is entangling himself in the affairs of civil life in order that he can please the one having enlisted him. 5 And then if anyone were to be a champion in public games, he would not be crowned unless he can compete according to the rules. 6 It is always necessary that the hardworking farmer be first to receive of the fruits. 7 Consider what I am saying, and may the Lord give you perspicacity in all.
8 Always remember Jesus Christ having been raised out of death — of David’s seed — according to my good news, 9 through which I am constantly suffering evil afflictions, even on to imprisonment as a criminal; but the Word of God has not been hindered. 10 On account of this I am enduring all for the sake of the elect, so that they also can obtain the salvation through Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The Word is faithful: for if we died with him, we shall also live with him. 12 If we are enduring, we shall also reign with him. If we are denying him, he himself shall also deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he is remaining faithful. He is not able to deny himself.
3:1-17. 1 But know this: that in concluding days perilous times shall present themselves. 2 For people will themselves be fond of self, fond of money, ostentatiously arrogant, conspicuously haughty, reproachfully blasphemous, rebellious toward parents, ungrateful and thankless, impious and unholy, 3 devoid of natural affection toward kindred, implacably unforgiving, treacherous slandering informers, devoid of self control, ferociously brutal, inimically hateful toward good, 4 traitorous betrayers, rashly headstrong, egomaniacs having been demented with conceit, fond of pleasure rather than fond of God, 5 having a form of “godliness,” but the power of it having been contradicted and denied. And turn yourself away from these, 6 for of these are those entering homes and captivating weak, trifling, gullible, silly women, (of these are those) having been loaded down with sins, being forcefully driven by manifold lusty desires, 7 ever learning yet never being able to come to, or arrive at, an experientially applicable knowledge of truth. 8 And even as Jannes and Jambres stood against Moses, so also these are setting themselves in opposition against the truth — people — the mind having been completely depraved — unable to stand approved regarding the Faith. 9 But they will not more widely progress, for their rash lack of understanding will be clearly evident and very obvious to all — even as became that of (Jannes and Jambres).
10 Yet you carefully followed my doctrinal teaching, way of life, purpose, faith, fortitude, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings, what happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, in Lystra — what kind of persecutions I underwent. And the Lord himself rescued me from all. 12 Yea and all those desiring to live godly before Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 Yet evil persons and cheating impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you steadfastly persevere in what you learned and were assured of, having known for sure from whom you learned, 15 and that from childhood you have solidly known the hallowed writings — the ones being able to make you wise to the extent of salvation by way of faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All (true) Scripture is God-breathed and beneficially useful for informative instruction, for reproof and refutation, for reformative correction, for training and discipline to righteousness, 17 in order that the man of God, having been completely equipped, might be thoroughly fit for every good work.
2:14-26. 14 Always remember these things, solemnly charging yourself before the Lord to dispute not over good for nothing trivia to the detriment of those hearing. 15 Be quick to show yourself approved to God — a worker unashamed — rightly teaching the word of truth. 16 And keep yourself aloof from profane, secular, futile disputations, for they will tend toward more ungodliness, 17 and their message will have a corrosive spread like gangrene, of which are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who, concerning the truth missed the mark, saying “the resurrection has to have already occurred,” and they are subverting the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the solid foundation has stood firm having this seal: “Christ already knew those, his existing,” and “Let every man naming the Name of Christ depart from unrighteousness.” 20 Now in a great house exist not only gold and silver vessels, but also wood and clay, and indeed some for honor, and some for dishonor. 21 Howbeit, if ever anyone cleanses himself from these (profane, secular, futile disputations) he will himself be a vessel for honor, having been set apart from that which is common or profane, and highly useful to the Master, having been made ready for every good work. 22 And always flee the juvenile lusts natural to youth, and always pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, together with those ever calling for themselves upon the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 And always excuse yourself from moronic and stupid debates, knowing for sure that they are always generating fights: 24 and a slave of Christ ought not allow himself to fight, but to be mild, gentle and kind toward all, adept at teaching, patiently enduring injustices, 25 teaching with meekness and forbearance those opposing themselves. May God peradventure grant them repentance on to an experientially applicable knowledge of truth, 26 and maybe recapture themselves from the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him for his bidding.
1:13-18. 13 Always hold to a healthy and sound presentment of words which you heard from me with the faith and love within Christ Jesus. 14 Keep and guard the good deposit committed to your charge by means of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
15 You have known this of a surety: that all the ones within Asia were turned away from me, of which is Phygellus, also Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often cheered and refreshed me, and he was not ashamed of my chain, 17 but establishing himself in Rome, he more zealously searched and found me. 18 May the Lord allow him to find mercy from Christ in that day! And you are very well aware of how well he served in Ephesus.
4:9-22. 9 Make haste to come to me soon. 10 For, loving the present age, Demas forsook me and journeyed into Thessalonica, Crescens into Galatia, Titus into Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Having taken Mark on board, bring him with yourself, for he is useful to me for service. 12 I also sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 Coming, bring the coat which I left in Troas with Carpus — and the books — more specifically, the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith himself openly perpetrated much evil toward me. May the Lord repay him according to his works: 15 who even you must watch, for he has greatly withstood our doctrine.
16 In my initial defense no one supported or stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be imputed to them. 17 But the Lord stood by me and empowered me so that by way of me the preaching might be brought to full measure that all the Gentiles might hear. However, I was rescued out of a lion’s mouth. 18 And the Lord himself will rescue me from every evil work, and will bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom, to whom be the glory on to the ages of ages. Amen.
19 Greet Prisca and Aquila and the house of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus ailing in Miletus. 21 Make haste to come before winter. Eubulus greets you — also Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.
22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you all. Amen.
