1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to sojourners of the dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, selected/chosen out/elect 2 according to father God’s pre-determinate foreknowledge for spiritual sanctification in accordance with submission and lustration of Jesus Christ’s blood: may grace and peace be multiplied to you all.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One having regenerated us according to his great mercy into a living hope by means of a resurrection of Jesus Christ out of death, 4 into an enduring, inviolate and unfading inheritance that has been reserved in heaven for you — 5 the ones being kept/guarded by God’s power by means of/because of/through faith for a deliverance ready to be revealed in a final point of time. 6 In which you yourselves are celebrating a little, since it is now necessary, having been pained by variegated trials, 7 in order that/so that the approved character of your faith, much more valuable than the gold being lost, now being assayed by means of fire, might be found for the purpose of praise and honor, even for the purpose of glory at Jesus Christ’s revelation. 8 Whom, knowing not, you all faithfully love, value and esteem; upon whom, presently seeing not, believing, you all are yourselves continually rejoicing with ineffable joy, and, having been glorified, 9 receiving to yourselves the objective of your faith — a salvation of souls.
10 On account of which salvation prophets diligently investigated and carefully searched out — those having prophesied concerning the grace among you all — 11 searching into who or what season the Spirit of Christ on them was signifying, predicting the sufferings upon Christ, and the glories after these (sufferings). 12 It was disclosed to them that they were administering these (things) not to themselves, but to you, which (things) were now declared to you by those having proclaimed (the) good news to you all, arrayed with a Holy Spirit that has been sent from heaven, into which (things) angels have earnest desire to intently look into.
13 Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, being vigilant (and) circumspect, you all completely and expectantly hope after the grace being brought to you all at Jesus Christ’s revelation, 14 as children of obedience, not assimilating, fashioning or conforming yourselves to the former cupidinous desires inside of your (former) ignorance, 15 but just as the One having summoned you all (is) holy, you all also be holy in every mode of life, 16 in as much as it has been written,
“You all become holy, because I am holy.”
17 And since you all are calling for yourselves upon a Father — the One judging impartially with reference to the work of each one severally — you all be conducting yourselves for the duration of your sojourning with fear, 18 knowing for sure that you all were not redeemed with perishable silver or gold out of the perverted way of life of you all handed down by tradition from your forefathers, 19 but with Christ’s precious blood — as a blameless and spotlessly pure lamb — 20 on the one hand having been pre-determinately foreordained before (the) world’s foundation, on the other hand having been manifested in the last of epochs for your sakes — 21 those (of you) faithing in God by means of/on account of him — the God having raised him out of death, and the God having given glory to him, therefore your faith and expectant hope are to be in God.
22 Having morally purified your souls by obeying the truth with a view toward spirituality on to unfeigned love of the brotherhood, lovingly care for one another, fervently, out of a pure heart, 23 having been regenerated — not out of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible — by means of God’s word (which is) living and abiding to the extent of the age. 24 For,
“All flesh (is) as grass, and all man’s glory (is) as a grass’ flower. The grass was withered, and it’s flower fell to the ground; but the Lord’s word is abiding to the extent of the age.”
25 And this is that word: that that has been proclaimed as good news to you all.
2:1 Therefore, taking off and laying aside all malignity, and all deceit, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all slanders, 2 as new-born infants you all desire the spiritually unadulterated milk so that by it you all may be increased, 3 since indeed you all have perceptively experienced that the Lord is graciously obliging, 4 (concerning) whom: coming toward an ever living Stone, on the one hand having been tried and rejected by men, but on the other hand, choice, precious before God, 5 you yourselves are being built up as ever living stones — a spiritual house, a holy priesthood — to offer up spiritual sacrifices pleasingly acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it is contained in the Scripture,
“Behold, I am placing a foundation Cornerstone in Zion, choice, precious; and the one faithing upon him shall never be put to shame.”
7 Therefore, the honor is for you — those continually faithing; but for (those) refusing belief and obedience:
“A Stone which those building tried and rejected, this turned into the Chief Cornerstone,” 8 and (into) “a Stone of stumbling and a Rock of offense” (to those) who are stumbling, refusing belief and obedience to the word, to which they were appointed.
9 But you all (are) a chosen progeny, a royal priesthood, a holy nation — a people for a special possession — that you all might proclaim the gracious acts of the One having summoned you all out of darkness into his wondrously glorious light; 10 (you) who, formerly, (were) not a people, but now are a people of God — those having not received pity and compassion, but now having received pity and compassion.
11 Beloved, I am admonishing (you all) as temporary residents yet residing in a land not your own, to sufficiently restrain yourselves from (the) cupidinous desires of the carnal nature which array themselves to battle against the soul, 12 holding your mode of life excellently honorable among the Gentiles so that, in whatever they are saying against you all as of evildoers, out of observing (your) excellently honorable actions, they might glorify God in a day of visitation.
13 Therefore, you all be subject to every sort of man-made institution while subject to the Lord: whether to a leader as ruling, or to officers as being sent by him to punish sinning and approve well-doing. For under such circumstances is the will of God: doing good to silence the ignorance of unenlightened men — 16 as in a state of freedom, yet not holding freedom as a cloak of evil, but as slaves of God. 17 Honor all. Lovingly care for the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the leader.
18 Household inmates (be) submitting yourselves with all deference to the masters — not only to the upright and fair, but also to the crooked — 19 for this (is) a pleasing circumstance if, for the sake of God-consciousness, one is patiently enduring affliction, suffering unjustly. 20 But if missing the mark and being punished you all at some point patiently endure, what kind of credit (is that)? But if doing well, and you all at some point patiently endure suffering, this (is) a matter of approval in the sight of God. 21 For to this you all were called, seeing that Christ also suffered for our sakes, leaving behind an example for you all to imitate, that you all might imitate his line of conduct, 22 who
“committed no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth;”
23 who being reviled, was not reviling in return; (who) suffering, was not threatening back, but was committing (it) to the One judging rightly; 24 who himself bore aloft our sin in his body upon the tree in order that, having died to sins ourselves, we might live for righteousness,
“of whom (it is true that) by his wound you all were restored from a state of sin and condemnation.”
25 For you all were like sheep being led astray, but you all have now been converted to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
3:1 Wives, in a similar drift, (be) submitting yourselves to your own husbands so that even though some are noncompliant to the word, by means of the lives of the wives, they will be won over without a word, 2 having watched your blamelessly chaste conduct accompanied by reverential fear. 3 Of whom (the wives) let it not exclusively be the external adornment of plaited hairs, or a wearing of gold, or a putting on of garments, 4 rather (let it be) the underlying being of the heart, (together) with the enduring persistence of the gentle and tranquil spirit, which is very precious in the eyes of God. 5 For so also the former holy women — those confidently waiting upon God — were adorning themselves, submitting themselves to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah submitted to Abraham, calling him “lord,” of whom you all have become children, doing well, and never being apprehensive of dismay.
7 Husbands (do) similarly, living with the female in awareness (of her) as a fragile/weaker vessel, continually bestowing honor (upon her) as for a fellow-participant of life’s grace, in order that your prayers be not hindered.
8 Now the objective: everyone (be) like-minded, sympathetic, brother-lovers, compassionately tenderhearted, courteously kind-minded, 9 not recompensing evil because of evil, or reviling because of reviling; but to the contrary, blessing, knowing absolutely that for this you all were called: that you all might inherit a blessing.
10 “For the one wanting to love life always, and to see good days, let him refrain/restrain his tongue from evil, and (allow) not his lips to speak guile; 11 let him turn away from evil, and let him do good; let him endeavor to obtain peace, and let him pursue it. 12 For (the) Lord’s eyes oversee (the) righteous ones, and his ears (are) for the purpose of their prayers, but (the) Lord’s face (is) against practicing criminals.”
13 And who will be the one causing evil to oppress you all when you all can make yourselves imitators of the good ones? 14 Really, though, may you all continue suffering for the sake of righteousness (and be) blessed; yet you all should not be fearing their intimidation, nor should you all be anxiously unsettled. 15 But you all set apart the Lord God in your hearts, and (be) ever ready with a verbal defense for every one asking you all an explanation of the confident expectation within you all with meekness and solicitude, 16 having a good/clear conscience so that those reviling your good conduct within Christ might be put to shame by what they may say against you all as evildoers.
17 For, better to suffer doing good — O may the will of God choose — than doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once for all on account of sins — a just One in stead of/in behalf of/for the sake of unjust ones — in order that/so that he could procure access to God for us all, having been bodily put to death on the one hand, having been spiritually made alive on the other hand; 19 by whom God also heralded, Christ having been passed on to the souls in confinement 20 that had at one time refused belief and obedience when God’s patient enduring of evil was itself awaiting in Noah’s days, an ark being built and put in readiness in which a few — that is eight souls — were saved because of/on account of water; 21 which antitype now is also saving us — (our) immersion (into Christ our ark by means of the Spirit for the necessity of our identification with him) — not a putting off/laying aside/removal of filthy, carnal squalor, but an appeal to God of a good/clear conscience because of/on account of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, 22 who is at God’s right (hand), having been passed from here into heaven — angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him.
4:1 Therefore, Christ having suffered in flesh in/on our behalf, you all also equip yourselves (with) the same purpose/thought/intention/mindset — for the one having suffered in flesh has been caused to leave off of sin — 2 in order to no longer live the time remaining/still left in carnality for (the) cupidinous lusts of men, but for God’s will. 3 For the duration of life having passed by is sufficient/enough for you all to (have) effected the will of the Gentiles, having wantonly walked for yourselves in intemperate, lascivious, outrageous behaviors (with) insolent license: for cupidinous lusts, for drunken binges, for parties, for drinking bouts, and wicked idolatries 4 in which, bad mouthing, others are amazed at you all not running in company with them into the same outpouring of debauchery, 5 who will yield up an account to the One possessing a readiness to judge (both) living and dead. 6 For (as mentioned above) for this purpose good news was also proclaimed to (the) dead, so that, on the one hand, they might be judged as men in flesh, but on the other hand, they might live with reference to God in spirit.
7 Now the end of all (things) has drawn near; therefore, you all be serious and be vigilant in (your) prayers; 8 and above all, have fervent love among yourselves, because love covers over a plethora of sins. 9 (Be) hospitable toward one another without expressions of covert, sullen discontent. 10 As each one received a gift, administer it among yourselves as good stewards of God’s variegated grace. 11 Whosoever preaches, let him (preach) as (if it were the) oracles of God. Whosoever serves, let him (serve) out of ability as God supplies, so that God can be glorified by all for the sake of Jesus Christ — to whom be the glory and the dominion on to the ages of ages. Amen.
12 Beloved, don’t you all be staggered by the fiery trial taking place in your midst for to afflict you, as an unexpected happening for you, 13 but as in proportion to your participation in the sufferings of Christ, you all rejoice, in order that/so that you all can then be glad — yourselves celebrating upon the revelation of his glory. 14 If you are being reviled for Christ’s Name (you are) fortunate, for that of the glory, and that of God’s Spirit, is resting itself upon you all. On the one hand, with reference to them he is being reviled/blasphemed, but on the other hand, with reference to you, he is being glorified. 15 Therefore, let not any one of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evildoer, or as a busybody in the matters of others: 16 but if (suffering) as a Christian, let him not be put to shame, but let him glorify God in this matter. 17 For the fitting judgment of the house of God is to commence itself; and if we (are) first, what (is) the end of those disobeying the good news of God? 18 For,
“If the righteous one is barely being saved, where will the godless sinner himself appear?”
19 Therefore, let those suffering according to the will of God also be entrusting their souls as to a faithful Creator by well-doing.
5:1 (As) the fellow-elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and the sharer of the impending glory about to be revealed, I encourage the elders among you all: 2 shepherd the flock of God in your midst; not overseeing necessarily, but voluntarily; neither for the sake of base gain, but readily; 3 nor as dominating the allotments, but being patterns of the flock; 4 and (when) the Chief Shepherd has been manifested, you all will receive to yourselves the enduring laurel wreath of glory.
5 So also you younger be subject to elders, all submitting yourselves to one another. You all clothe yourselves with humility of mind and deportment, for,
“God sets himself in opposition to arrogant ones, but he supplies grace to humble ones.”
6 Therefore, you all be humble under the mighty hand of God so that he can exalt you all in due time, 7 having cast all of your concerns upon him, for, to him there is a concern for you.
8 You all be vigilant. You all be attentive. Your slanderous adversary is walking about as a roaring lion seeking someone he can devour; 9 whom you all (must) resist/oppose, solid with faith, surely knowing the same of the sufferings to be fully endured by your Christian brotherhood in the world. 10 Now the God of all grace — the One having called you all into his eternal glory by Jesus Christ — may he himself make you all complete. (After) having suffered a little he will establish, strengthen (and) ground (you all). 11 To him be the glory and the power on to the ages of ages. Amen.
12 By our faithful brother Sylvanus — as I recon — I briefly wrote to you all, exhorting and testifying this to be God’s true grace in which you all are standing. 13 She in Babylon, elected along with (you all) greets you — even Mark my son. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all — all those within Christ Jesus. Amen.
